Ghost number plates

​

In February 2025 I stood up in Parliament and made a speech about the impact of ghost plates.

 

These number plates look normal to the human eye but are manipulated in some way to make them unreadable to the cameras that keep our roads safe from criminals and dangerous drivers.

 

I have been campaigning for the government to increase the penalty for those who use these number plates, which is a serious offence, and for our broken number plate system to be overhauled.

 

My campaign has been featured in several outlets including on BBC Panorama, the Daily Mail, Good Morning Britain and in the Guardian and the Observer

 

The government has pledged to take action in its Road Safety Strategy, published in January 2026.
